India’s evolving travel landscape is increasingly being shaped by improved road infrastructure and a growing appetite for road journeys, according to the latest Uber Intercity Travel Index. Based on aggregated Uber Intercity trip data from April to June 2026, the report highlights a significant rise in intercity travel, with Tier-II cities and regional routes emerging as key drivers of growth.
While established corridors such as Mumbai–Pune, Delhi–Agra, Bengaluru–Mysuru, Lucknow–Kanpur and Ahmedabad–Vadodara continued to record the highest trip volumes, the fastest-growing routes reflected a shift towards regional connectivity. Corridors including Ahmedabad–Vadodara, Delhi–Dehradun, Bengaluru–Mysuru, Delhi–Chandigarh and Chennai–Puducherry witnessed notable year-on-year growth, underscoring the increasing demand for seamless road travel between smaller cities and leisure destinations.
The Index also found that Indian travellers are embracing road trips for both leisure and cultural experiences. Weekend escapes to destinations such as Dehradun, Puducherry, Nashik and Aurangabad gained popularity during the summer months, while heritage and pilgrimage destinations including Agra, Mysuru, Prayagraj, Ajmer and Udaipur continued to attract significant traveller interest.
Commenting on the findings, Shiva Shailendran, Director – Revenue & Category Management, Uber India & South Asia, said, “A combination of safer intercity travel options like Uber Intercity along with an expanding and improved road infrastructure is driving road trips across India—not just between major cities, but increasingly across regional corridors and to destinations that offer unique cultural, spiritual and leisure experiences. This edition of the Uber Intercity Travel Index reflects how travel behaviour is evolving, with increased volume of road trips, new emerging intercity routes, and continued demand.”
The report further revealed that travellers increasingly planned leisure trips around long weekends, with demand surging during the May Day and Bakrid holiday periods. Some riders completed nearly 30 intercity journeys, while others collectively travelled close to 1,500 kilometres over three months.
Uber attributed this growing preference to enhanced convenience and safety features, including round-trip bookings, the Call2Ride service for riders without app access, and technology-driven safety tools such as the 24×7 Safety Line, RideCheck, Audio Recording and Share Your Trip. Together with India’s expanding highway network, these innovations are making intercity road travel more accessible, reliable and comfortable for travellers while creating greater earning opportunities for drivers.
