Kerala’s rich tourism potential, catering seamlessly to both luxury and budget travellers, was showcased by leading travel experts at Yaanam, India’s first-ever travel literary festival, held against the breathtaking backdrop of the Varkala cliffs.
During the session “Writing on Travel Destinations,” acclaimed travel documentary filmmaker Priya Ganapathy highlighted how Kerala’s tourism sector had successfully balanced high-end and budget travel, making the state a versatile choice for all kinds of travellers. She emphasised that, moving forward, the industry should focus on curating unique experiences through lesser-known destinations, enabling travellers to discover offbeat gems and create truly memorable journeys. Travel filmmaker Anurag Mallick drew attention to North Kerala’s rich cultural heritage, particularly its vibrant rituals such as Theyyam, describing the region as a largely untapped treasure trove of tourism potential. He advocated for the wider promotion of these festivals and culturally significant regions to enhance their visibility and economic impact.
Renowned food expert Karen Anand reflected on the evolution of travel over the past two decades, noting a marked increase in travel frequency and the growing appeal of documenting journeys through writing, photography, and video storytelling. Actress and vlogger Anumol, sharing her personal experiences of solo travel, highlighted that travel extends beyond sightseeing—it is about connecting with people, understanding their lives, and immersing oneself in their unique experiences.
In the session “Couch Surfing, Anyone?” Dr. Ginu Zachariah Umman, Chairman of the Kerala Food Commission, emphasised that authentic, immersive experiences form the heart of meaningful tourism, encouraging visitors to explore beyond the conventional. Journalists and authors N. P. Ullekh and A. U. Faizal Khan, in their session “My Cuban Days,” transported the audience to Cuba through Ullekh’s vivid travel recollections, illustrating how storytelling brings far-off cultures to life.
The Yaanam Festival, which masterfully blended travel and literature in an idyllic coastal setting, concluded on October 19, leaving attendees inspired by Kerala’s diverse offerings and the limitless possibilities of experiential travel.
