Rooted in Soulful Hospitality, Geared for the Future: A Conversation with Raja Gopaal Iyer, CEO of UDS Hotels & Resorts

Over two decades ago, UDS Hotels began with a simple vision—to craft hospitality experiences steeped in South Indian warmth, cultural vibrancy, and intuitive service. What started as a modest endeavour in Kovalam has evolved into a distinctive hospitality brand, one that seamlessly blends traditional values with contemporary luxury. Their flagship property has become a beacon of beachfront elegance in Kerala—celebrated for its coastal charm, culinary distinction, and holistic wellness offerings. With strategic forays into Ayurveda, destination weddings, and the growing MICE segment, the group has consistently reinvented itself while remaining anchored in its roots.

In this exclusive conversation with Voyager’s World, Raja Gopaal Iyer, Chief Executive Officer of UDS Hotels & Resorts, shares insights on the brand’s evolution, its focus on experiential travel, and what lies ahead for one of South India’s most respected hospitality names.

UDS Hotels has become a recognisable name in South Indian hospitality. What do you believe sets UDS apart in today’s competitive landscape?

In a market saturated with global chains and concept hotels, UDS stands out by offering something deeper—soulful hospitality. Our brand DNA is rooted in regional authenticity and emotional connection. From our design philosophy, which reflects coastal aesthetics and traditional architecture, to our personalised guest experiences, everything is crafted to feel immersive and intuitive. Our service culture, built on the ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava, ensures that every guest is treated like family. That’s the true differentiator.

How has your target audience evolved, especially in the post-pandemic world?

Our core audience includes domestic leisure travellers, wellness seekers, destination wedding clients, and MICE groups. Post-pandemic, we’ve seen a major shift—high-spending domestic travellers are opting for indulgent, safe experiences within India. Inbound tourism has also rebounded, especially from Europe and the Middle East, thanks to renewed interest in Ayurveda and coastal wellness. Plus, the rise of “work-from-anywhere” guests and micro-group travel has opened up exciting new segments for us.

Can you share more about the UDS Hotels’ expansion pipeline and long-term growth vision?

Absolutely. The journey has only just begun. Over the next 3–5 years, we are focused on both expansion and diversification. A luxury Ayurveda & Wellness Retreat in Alleppey is ready to welcome guests, while our premium backwater resort in Alleppey is already garnering rave reviews. In the serene hills of Wagamon, a tea garden retreat that harmonises luxury with nature is set to launch by January 2026. We’re also in the final stages of developing a boutique business hotel in Trivandrum, aimed at catering to the growing medical tourism and corporate travel segments. One of our most ambitious projects is Trivandrum’s most advanced convention centre, a world-class venue designed for global conferences, grand weddings, and exhibitions, complete with parking for over 600 vehicles. Additionally, we are actively exploring asset-light models and franchise partnerships across South India to scale the UDS brand in a sustainable and intelligent manner.

Sustainability seems to be at the heart of the UDS brand. How is this reflected in your operations?

For us, sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a commitment. At our Kovalam property, we’ve invested in solar energy, waste recycling, and organic composting. We’ve eliminated single-use plastics and promote eco-conscious dining. Our Ayur Ashram brand delivers Ayurvedic wellness under licensed practitioners, blending ancient healing with modern diagnostics. We’ve also introduced plant-based menus, yoga retreats, and holistic wellness weekends to meet evolving guest preferences.

Experiential travel is booming. How does UDS immerse its guests in Kerala’s culture?

We’re all about curating memories, not just stays. Guests can enjoy coastal village tours, sunset catamaran rides, temple trail walks, and cooking classes. At our Alleppey property, we’re adding backwater cruise stays, toddy shop trails, and coir-making demonstrations. Weekly cultural evenings promote local performers and artisans. It’s about making every visit a story worth sharing.

How has UDS embraced digital transformation and guest-centric technology?

We’ve adopted tech at every guest and backend touchpoint. From smart check-in kiosks and mobile apps for room service to AI-driven guest feedback tools, we ensure seamless service. Tools like Rankly help us manage real-time sentiment analysis. On the backend, cloud-based PMS, ERP systems, and inventory control allow agile operations. Our upcoming convention centre will feature hybrid conferencing setups and intelligent visitor management—a real game-changer for MICE.

Tell us about the UDS Academy and how you’re investing in hospitality talent.

At UDS, we believe people build brands. Our UDS Academy trains professionals in hospitality and aviation, focusing on soft skills, leadership, and operational excellence. With standardised SOPs, cross-training programs, and regular audits, we maintain consistency across properties. Performance recognition is deeply embedded in our culture. We’re not just building hotels—we’re building careers and futures.

How strong is your B2B ecosystem, and what role does it play in your growth?

B2B partners are vital. We work closely with travel agents, DMCs, tour operators, and corporates through dedicated relationship managers, exclusive rate plans, and incentive programs. We host familiarisation trips, co-branded promotions, and networking events. The new convention centre will significantly expand opportunities for MICE planners, event agencies, and global exhibitions.

What is your 10-year vision for UDS Hotels & Resorts?

Our vision is both clear and ambitious. We aspire to become South India’s most admired hospitality brand, known for soulful service, cultural authenticity, and guest-first innovation. As we grow, we plan to expand into coastal, wellness, and cultural destinations across India, building a strong presence beyond our home turf. Under the UDS umbrella, we aim to develop India’s finest wellness retreats and event venues, setting new benchmarks in experiential hospitality. A key part of our future strategy includes the launch of a hotel management brand, enabling us to operate third-party hotels without the need for fresh construction. Through it all, we remain deeply committed to being a responsible employer, a community partner, and a champion of sustainability in everything we do.
