Karnataka’s new tourism policy, which aims to raise domestic tourist visits from 28 crore to 48 crore per year and foreign tourist visits from 4 lakh to 20 lakh, was approved by the State Cabinet in 2024. According to data presented in the policy, tourism is expected to play an essential role in Karnataka’s development into a $1 trillion economy by 2032. The state receives about 10% of all tourist visitors in India, ranking fourth among the Indian states. Domestic tourist visits climbed from 36.7 million in 2006 to 283.5 million by 2023. Foreign tourist arrivals in 2024 exceeded 4.01 lakh.

The policy focuses on 25 niche tourism themes that attract tourists to the state. 50 adventure destinations for land, air, and water-based adventure activities will be established across the state. Other tourism themes to be promoted include golf, gastronomic tourism, cultural tourism, heritage tourism, coastal tourism, films, agriculture, education, healthcare, inland water, maritime, mining, spirituality, and sports.

“As a native of Mysuru, south India’s cultural heartland, I can’t get enough of what Karnataka has to offer. Karnataka is rich in history, which is and can serve as an even greater draw for the experiential tourist. The success template of Jungle Lodges and Resorts should be adapted for heritage experiences. Improved air and rail connectivity has made it easier to reach farther locations, and timely investments by hospitality players have increased their appeal. The Karnataka government has amazing initiatives, such as the KITE event. The restoration of the Golden Chariot train can enhance tourism prospects. Intent must become action. The regional tourism centres designated for development must be assigned to a regional task force with specific deadlines for action items to be presented to the tourism ministry. All of us tourism stakeholders must come together to connect the dots and help create a seamless experience for the traveller,” states Mr Niranjan S Bhargava, Chairman, TAAI – Karnataka.

“The state, led by its capital, Bengaluru, the Garden City of India, has made rapid strides in industrial growth over the years. The presence of large PSUs, IT companies, manufacturing hubs, and machine tool parks, in and around the city has spurred event organisers to host shows. With many landing up at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), these shows—large-scale industrial exhibitions, smaller trade shows, and corporate events—have seen record attendance. The subsequent editions of these shows have been larger, drawing greater footfalls. As one of the fastest-growing business destinations in India, Bengaluru is preferred for large exhibitions held in BIEC like IMTEX, EXCON, STONA, IndiaWood, Gems & Jewellery, and other shows like Aero India, Global Investors Meet, etc. held in different venues. Shows such as these promote trade and commerce and boost industrial and economic growth.

Karnataka has always been ahead of its peers in terms of business; for example, the state has set up one of the world’s largest solar parks, launched booster kits for startups, set up industrial clusters in various regions, and has been a top achiever state in ease of doing business. It is one of the first states in India to come up with an electric vehicle policy to develop Bengaluru into an electric vehicle capital. Karnataka is leading India’s electric mobility with more than 5,000 public EV charging stations, setting a pace for sustainable transportation. Forward-thinking policies, public-private partnerships, reduction of carbon emissions, building of infrastructure (airports, highways, rail, and metro stations), and many other initiatives are encouraging investors to consider Karnataka and Bengaluru,” adds a spokesperson from Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)
