As India’s hospitality sector enters a new phase of global integration and rapid expansion, strategic partnerships are becoming increasingly important for homegrown hotel brands looking to scale while maintaining their identity. The recent collaboration between The Fern Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International marks a significant development in this direction, bringing together Fern’s sustainability-led philosophy and strong domestic footprint with Marriott’s global distribution and loyalty ecosystem.
Voyager’s World speaks to Suhail Kannampilly, Managing Director, Fern Hotels & Resorts, in an exclusive interview about the strategic thinking behind the partnership, the opportunities it creates for hotel owners, and the brand’s ambitious growth plans for the coming years.
What was the strategic thinking behind The Fern Hotels & Resorts’ collaboration with Marriott?
The collaboration between The Fern Hotels & Resorts and Marriott International is built on a shared vision of growth while remaining committed to core values such as sustainability and responsible hospitality. By combining Fern’s strong domestic footprint and eco-conscious philosophy with Marriott’s global scale, sophisticated distribution systems and strong brand recognition, the partnership creates a powerful platform for expansion.
The collaboration has been introduced through Series by Marriott, a regional collection brand designed to bring locally rooted hotel groups into Marriott’s global ecosystem. This strategic alignment allows Fern to expand its reach internationally while continuing to operate and grow its properties across India. Importantly, the partnership enables the brand to accelerate its growth while retaining its distinct identity and commitment to sustainable hospitality — a philosophy that has always defined its positioning in the Indian market.

How will this collaboration benefit both Fern and the independent hotel owners within its portfolio?
The partnership presents significant opportunities for both the brand and the independent hotel owners who are part of the Fern portfolio. Through integration with Marriott International via Series by Marriott, Fern-managed properties gain access to a much larger global hospitality ecosystem.
For hotel owners, the collaboration brings several tangible benefits. Properties will be able to leverage Marriott’s global reservation and distribution systems, gain visibility through its worldwide sales and marketing network, and connect with the extensive Marriott Bonvoy member base. At the same time, hotels will retain their local identity and operational flexibility, which remains a key advantage for independent developers. This balance between global reach and local character enhances Fern’s value proposition as a management partner, helping owners strengthen their visibility, occupancy potential and international reach.
In what ways will the partnership allow Fern properties to leverage Marriott’s global network?
Through the collaboration, participating Fern properties will be integrated into Marriott International’s extensive global distribution network and loyalty ecosystem, significantly enhancing their reach in international markets. A key element of this integration is access to Marriott Bonvoy, one of the world’s largest hospitality loyalty programmes. This connection enables Fern-affiliated hotels to engage with millions of global travellers, corporate travel networks and international booking channels, including major GDS platforms widely used by travel agents.
Guests staying at these properties will also be able to earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points on eligible room stays. This feature makes Fern hotels particularly appealing to frequent international travellers and loyalty members, while also strengthening their overall visibility and booking potential in global markets.
How does this collaboration strengthen Fern’s positioning in India’s competitive hospitality market?
The association with Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel company, significantly enhances the positioning of The Fern Hotels & Resorts within India’s competitive hospitality landscape. The partnership reinforces the brand’s credibility and builds greater confidence among both travellers and hotel owners. At the same time, the collaboration strengthens Fern’s presence in the rapidly growing midscale and upscale hospitality segments across India. It also supports further expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, markets where the brand already has strong experience and a deep understanding of local demand.
By combining its sustainability-led hospitality approach with Marriott’s global standards and distribution strength, Fern can differentiate itself more clearly in a highly competitive industry.
What is the company’s growth strategy for the next two to three years?
Looking ahead, The Fern Hotels & Resorts is pursuing an ambitious growth trajectory driven by expansion, strategic collaborations and a broader market presence across India. A major element of this strategy is the gradual integration of a large pipeline of Fern hotels into the Series by Marriott platform. This will allow more Fern-managed properties to benefit from Marriott’s global ecosystem while continuing to operate within the brand’s established hospitality framework.
From a long-term perspective, the company aims to expand its portfolio to around 500 hotels over the next five years. The brand will continue to focus on emerging tourism destinations, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, as well as key business and leisure markets where demand for quality hospitality is steadily increasing. Alongside expansion, Fern also expects to build more strategic partnerships with developers and hotel owners as opportunities continue to grow within the evolving hospitality landscape.
