Affordable yet impactful, Mara Duma Bush Camp stands as a compelling example of responsible tourism done right.

Voyager’s World speaks to Sanjeev Mishra, CEO, Mara Duma Bush Camp, in an exclusive interview to uncover a safari story rooted in passion, purpose and place.

The Indian outbound travel market is growing rapidly. What potential do you see in attracting Indian travellers to Mara Duma Bush Camp?

India represents a significant and growing opportunity for us. With millions of Indian travellers seeking iconic, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, African safaris are increasingly high on their wish lists. The availability of direct flights from Mumbai and New Delhi to Nairobi has made the Masai Mara far more accessible than ever before.

Indian travellers across age groups are drawn to the authenticity of the experience—being close to nature, enjoying exclusive safaris, and immersing themselves in a destination that feels both adventurous and meaningful. Kenya’s rising popularity among Indian travellers aligns perfectly with what Mara Duma offers.

Are there any specific offerings or curated experiences that cater to Indian families, honeymooners, or small groups?

Yes, we curate experiences carefully to suit different traveller profiles. For Indian families, we offer kid-safe game drives and engaging activities such as Maasai craft sessions that are both educational and enjoyable. Honeymooners are treated to private sundowners, intimate bush dinners, and secluded experiences that celebrate romance in the wilderness.

Small groups benefit from exclusive-use safari vehicles, ensuring flexibility and personalised exploration. Dining is another area where we cater thoughtfully—our in-house vegetarian Indian cook prepares flavourful, spice-infused meals tailored to Indian palates, alongside a wide selection of non-vegetarian dishes spanning African, Indian, and Continental cuisines.

Sustainability is an important aspect of modern travel. What are some eco-conscious practices or community engagement initiatives at Mara Duma?

Sustainability and community engagement are at the core of Mara Duma’s philosophy. We work closely with the local Maasai community, supporting initiatives such as digging wells for villages, contributing to the local middle school, and funding anti-poaching squads that protect endangered species like rhinos and cheetahs.

Environmentally, we recycle water wherever possible, employ local staff, and have installed water dispensers throughout the camp while providing aluminium bottles to guests to significantly reduce plastic waste. These initiatives are not add-ons—they are fundamental to how we operate.

Can you share some unique wildlife sightings or conservation stories that your guests have experienced recently?

The Mara continues to deliver extraordinary moments. Recently, a guest captured a rare cheetah cub hunt at dawn, while another witnessed a dramatic encounter where a leopard brought down a cheetah. The Rongai pride was seen taking down a buffalo, and during the migration, guests watched a pride feasting on wildebeest—an unforgettable spectacle of nature’s raw power.

On the conservation front, our ongoing rhino monitoring partnership has yielded encouraging results, and these stories are often shared around the campfire, fostering a deeper appreciation for the work being done to protect the ecosystem.

How is the camp positioned to support and collaborate with travel agents and tour operators, particularly from markets like India?

We strongly believe in partnership-driven growth. Mara Duma collaborates closely with travel agents and tour operators through mutually agreed contracts, familiarisation trips, and transparent communication. Our dedicated India desk ensures seamless bookings, quick responses, and tailored support, making it easier for partners to confidently promote the camp to their clients.

What booking patterns or travel trends have you noticed among Indian travellers visiting Kenya for safaris?

Indian travellers typically book between July and September to coincide with the Great Migration, often travelling in groups of six to twelve. There is a strong preference for all-inclusive packages that offer ease, comfort, and value. Increasingly, Indian families and groups are seeking private safaris and culturally enriching experiences rather than mass tourism, which aligns perfectly with our offering.

How important is storytelling and digital presence in promoting niche safari experiences like yours in today’s competitive market?

Storytelling and a strong digital presence are essential in today’s competitive safari market, as travellers seek connection, authenticity, and value before they book. Mara Duma was born from my passion to make the Masai Mara accessible to a wider audience, offering a rich, immersive safari experience at a price that does not break the bank. Through digital storytelling, we communicate this philosophy clearly—sharing real wildlife moments, guest experiences, and the purpose behind the camp—allowing us to stand out in a crowded market while staying true to our vision of affordable, meaningful safaris.

Looking ahead, what are your expansion plans or new experiences being introduced at Mara Duma Bush Camp for 2025 and beyond?

Looking to the future, we plan to add more cottages while maintaining the camp’s intimate feel. New experiences, such as hot-air balloon safaris and wellness-focused yoga retreats, are being introduced to broaden the appeal. On the sustainability front, a full transition to solar energy is underway, along with plans to expand our community scholarship programmes.

Our goal is to grow responsibly—enhancing guest experiences while deepening our positive impact on the land and the people who call it home.
