India has emerged as one of the most influential source markets for the Maldives, reshaping demand patterns across leisure, luxury, and experiential travel. As connectivity continues to strengthen between the two countries, Maldivian—the national carrier of the Maldives—is expanding its presence to better serve this fast-growing segment. With Kochi now playing a renewed role in its India network, the airline is positioning itself to support both inbound tourism and outbound medical travel.
Voyager’s World speaks to Mr. Mohamed Saffah, General Manager (Commercial) – International, Maldivian, in an exclusive interview on the airline’s India strategy, opportunities, and long-term vision.
What strategic factors influenced Maldivian Air’s decision to launch direct services to Kochi at this point?
Maldivian has been operating direct flights to Kochi since 2019, reaffirming the importance of this route in our network. India has become one of the Maldives’ leading source markets for tourism, with Indian travellers increasingly choosing the Maldives for their luxury getaway, attracted by its proximity, visa-on-arrival convenience, and world-class resorts. At the same time, Kochi holds significant importance for Maldivians seeking advanced medical care. The city is home to renowned hospitals and specialised treatment centres, making it a preferred destination for those requiring quality healthcare services. Strengthening this route ensures we meet the growing demand from Indian travellers while continuing to support Maldivians who rely on Kochi for critical medical treatment and consultations.
How does Kochi fit into your broader India expansion strategy? Are more Indian gateways being considered?
Kochi is an important part of our India network, serving both Maldivians travelling for medical care and Indian leisure travellers visiting the Maldives. It complements our operations to Trivandrum, including direct flights from Hanimaadhoo, which continue to support travel and connectivity between our two countries.
Together, Kochi and Trivandrum give us valuable insight into market demand as we plan for future growth. India remains one of the Maldives’ key tourism and outbound travel markets, and we are actively assessing additional gateways that can improve accessibility and offer more choice to passengers. Kochi supports our broader strategy to build a stronger, more connected presence across India in the years ahead.
India is now one of the fastest-growing source markets for Maldives tourism. What opportunities does this create for an airline like yours?
India’s position as a top source market for Maldives tourism, combined with its proximity and a fast‑growing economy, opens significant opportunities across inbound leisure segments, including honeymooners, families, luxury seekers, and MICE travellers. We are also seeing strong demand for weekend getaways, with the Maldives perceived as an all‑year‑round destination thanks to its proximity and unique experiences. At the same time, medical travel from the Maldives to India ensures consistent outbound demand. This dual dynamic strengthens our network and creates year‑round opportunities for Maldivian travellers.
How do you see the demand for experiential and luxury travel from India evolving, and what role can Maldivian Air play here?
Indian travellers are increasingly seeking curated, immersive experiences, and the Maldives is perfectly positioned to deliver that. Maldivian offers seamless connectivity from Kochi to Male and then connects to the scattered islands of the Maldives, supported by the largest domestic network in the country, connecting 17 domestic destinations. We also operate seaplane services, enabling travellers to fly directly from their first touchpoint in the Maldives to their chosen island stay. This integrated network ensures a smooth, premium experience from doorstep to paradise.
How is the airline preparing to meet the expectations of diverse Indian traveller segments—families, honeymooners, FITs, premium travellers, and corporate groups?
We recognise the growing demand from Indian travellers for flexibility and convenience. To meet this, we’ve introduced a fifth weekly flight from Kochi and Trivandrum to the Maldives, giving travellers more options for weekend getaways and longer stays. Onboard, guests enjoy warm Maldivian hospitality and a comfortable dual‑class cabin, Premium Economy and Economy, so you can choose the experience that fits your trip. Our schedules are timed for smooth departures and relaxed arrivals, making every journey seamless from gate to getaway.

How important are Indian travel trade partnerships to your route development strategy, and what collaborations are you planning with tour operators, OTAs, and travel agents?
Indian travel trade partnerships are pivotal to our route development. Through co‑created packages, OTA co‑marketing, and agent enablement in Kochi and other cities, we are promoting the Maldives as a convenient, year‑round destination. As well as showcasing our dual‑class cabins and warm Maldivian hospitality to drive sustainable inbound growth.
Are there initiatives in place to support the MICE and wedding travel segments, which are increasingly choosing the Maldives as a destination?
Yes. For inbound traffic from India, we are developing group booking solutions and charter options tailored for weddings and corporate events. Our online charter portal (https://maldivian.aero/charters/) makes it easier for partners to plan and request customised operations, and our network connects to multiple airports across the Maldives, giving groups flexibility in choosing venues and regions that best fit their event.
We are also working closely with prominent hospitality brands in the Maldives to support coordinated travel for large groups. These collaborations allow us to complement resort offerings, streamline transfers, and create end-to-end solutions that enhance the overall MICE and wedding travel experience.
What is your long-term vision for the Indian market, and where do you see Maldivian Air positioned within this competitive landscape?
India’s vast population and close proximity make it a natural growth engine for us, and its rising economy continues to increase the propensity to travel. India remains a top source market for the Maldives, and we have supported this demand through reliable Kochi and Trivandrum services, warm Maldivian hospitality, dual-class cabins, and authentic Maldivian experiences throughout the journey.
Looking ahead, our vision is to be the preferred carrier for Indian travellers by expanding our network, increasing capacity where demand is strong, and enhancing connectivity for both leisure and business travel. This includes strengthening our existing routes, improving schedule convenience for weekend getaways and longer stays, and working closely with tour operators, online travel agencies, and travel agents across Kochi and other key cities.
Any message you would like to share with the Indian travel trade community as you commence operations in Kochi?
