Ministry of Tourism’s Southern Regional Office Conducts Capacity Building Programme in Coimbatore

In line with the Ministry of Tourism’s vision to reposition India Tourism Offices as Catalysts for Convergence—facilitating collaboration between states and the tourism industry—and as Visitor Experience Enhancers, the Southern Regional Office has launched a series of capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism promotion and stakeholder engagement across the region.

As part of this renewed strategy, the Southern Regional Office, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department (Coimbatore Office) and Skal International Coimbatore Chapter, organised a Capacity-Building Training Programme on “Best Practices in Housekeeping” on Nov 25, at Hotel IKON by Annapoorna, Coimbatore.

The programme brought together 75 housekeeping professionals from 25 hotels across Coimbatore, Valparai, and Pollachi. Designed to elevate service delivery and guest satisfaction, the training focused on upgrading professional skills, improving operational efficiency, and reinforcing high-quality housekeeping standards within the hospitality sector.

Venkatesan, Regional Director (South), Ministry of Tourism, addressed the gathering and underscored the crucial role of sustainable and efficient housekeeping practices in shaping the overall guest experiences. He also highlighted emerging hospitality trends and the need for continuous skill enhancement to meet evolving industry expectations.

An expert session was delivered by Dr. Eugene, Lecturer, Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM), who presented global best practices, innovative techniques, and practical demonstrations in housekeeping operations. The session was highly interactive and received enthusiastic participation.

In her vote of thanks, T. Jegatheswari, District Tourist Officer, Government of Tamil Nadu, emphasised that service quality is central to a destination’s image and that excellence in guest experience directly contributes to tourism growth and brand perception.

Participants expressed appreciation for the programme’s relevance and requested more industry-oriented training sessions like this. India Tourism Chennai has planned to organise similar workshops across other Southern cities in partnership with industry associations and academic institutions.

This initiative reflects the Ministry of Tourism’s broader mandate to enhance India’s tourism competitiveness through skill development, capacity building, industry collaboration, and a sustained focus on enriching visitor experiences.
