Hospitality in the Age of Intelligence: Dr. Suborno Bose on IIHM’s AI-Driven Future

Since founding the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) in 1994, Dr. Suborno Bose, Founder-Chairman and Chief Mentor, has redefined how hospitality is taught—blending innovation, industry collaboration, and global exposure to create world-class professionals. Under his visionary leadership, IIHM has grown into a global network of campuses that champion experiential learning, technology integration, and human-centric excellence—positioning India as a rising hub for international hospitality education.

Voyager’s World speaks to Dr. Suborno Bose in an exclusive interview about his remarkable journey of transforming hospitality education in India.

What inspired you to establish a chain of hotel management institutes, and how did you identify the need for it in the Indian hospitality industry?

When I founded the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) in 1994, I was driven by a very clear vision: to transform hospitality education in India and make it globally competitive. At that time, there was a noticeable gap between what the industry needed and what traditional institutions were offering. I saw an urgent need to bridge that gap with a new kind of learning environment—one that was not just academic but deeply rooted in industry exposure, innovation, and global standards. What inspired me most was the potential of hospitality as a career path. I always believed that hospitality was more than just hotels—it was about people, experiences, cultures, and service excellence. Yet, there were very few institutions preparing young Indians to meet global hospitality standards. That’s when I realised India needed a new model—something bold, experiential, and internationally connected. That’s how IIHM was born.

Today, we have campuses in Kolkata, Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Siliguri—and even in Bangkok and Samarkand—with Sri Lanka in the pipeline. Each campus shares a common goal: to empower young minds with both the knowledge and the attitude to lead in global hospitality.

What do you believe sets your institute apart from other hotel management institutes in India, in terms of training, facilities, or approach to education?

From the beginning, my aim was to make IIHM a place where students could not only learn hospitality but live it. That meant global internships, world-class faculty, immersive training, and the kind of curriculum that made our students industry-ready from day one. And as the demand for skilled professionals grew, especially in emerging sectors like tourism, aviation, retail, events, and healthcare, the scope of hospitality education had to evolve. IIHM adapted accordingly—and expanded rapidly across India and overseas.

Let me now answer your embedded question in this question: How has the curriculum evolved since the institute’s inception to keep up with the ever-changing demands of the hospitality industry?

IIHM offers unique courses like Principles of Management, HR Management, Digital Marketing, and Hospitality Technology that prepare its students to excel in a competitive job market where management skills are fundamental in leadership roles. The emphasis on technology is a default teaching mantra, with advanced learning software used in the best hotels in the world. IIHM is likely the first hospitality education institution globally to have pioneered the integration of AI in its curriculum, syllabus, and practical teaching.

How do you ensure that your students are industry-ready and capable of meeting the global standards in hospitality management?

One of the strongest validations of our mission has been the overwhelming industry response. Today, many of our students get multiple job offers—some even four or five at a time—reflecting a massive demand for trained talent. That tells me we were right to believe in this vision. The Indian hospitality industry is going through its golden age, and I’m proud that IIHM is helping shape the leaders who will define it.

Global Standards of Education set us apart. IIHM is not just a hotel management institution. We are a coveted international hospitality chain which teaches the business of hospitality. It goes beyond operations and teaches hospitality management. Accessible learning with collaborations with the best international institutes is the hallmark of IIHM campus life. A BSc Hons degree in International Hospitality Management, in alliance with the University of West London, is offered. IIHM has strategic tie-ups with colleges in France, Mauritius, and Australia. International faculty regularly take online classes across campuses.

With the hospitality industry undergoing digital transformation, how is your institute incorporating technology into its training and operations?

I believe evolution is the key to staying relevant. That’s why we’re deeply focused on integrating technology—especially artificial intelligence—into our academic ecosystem. With tools like NamAIste, the world’s first GPT for hospitality, we are making learning more interactive, personalised, and future-focused. We’ve also launched books and platforms that explore how AI can co-exist with the emotional intelligence that hospitality demands. We’re not just preparing students for jobs—we’re preparing them for the future.

Technology is an indispensable tool for assimilating oceans of data and extrapolating for better interpretation and dissemination. The use of AI and LLMs has enabled seamless knowledge sharing and practical demonstrations across campuses. The education space is a giant global library or research centre. Students now access tailored content at their own pace, fostering deeper engagement and understanding. This shift empowers learners and educators alike, breaking down barriers of geography and accessibility.

How do you collaborate with industry leaders, hotels, and hospitality brands to offer real-world experiences and placement opportunities for your students?

The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) continues to set benchmarks in hospitality education through dynamic collaborations with leading hotels, brands, and industry icons. Through the IIHM International College of Distinguished Fellows (FIIHMS), over 150 global hospitality leaders mentor students via talks, roundtables, and career guidance. The annual International Hospitality Day, celebrated across campuses with the International Hospitality Council (UK), honours unsung hotel heroes—from chefs and bartenders to housekeepers and security personnel—bringing real-world stories into the classroom.

Strategic MoUs with brands such as Marriott, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, and Pride Hotels Ltd ensure students gain hands-on internships, industry-preferred placements, and access to faculty-led masterclasses. These alliances also bring senior hotel professionals into IIHM for skill-building sessions aligned with current brand standards. From global mentors and frontline heroes to structured internships and on-campus training by industry experts, IIHM offers a 360° bridge between education and the working world—shaping students into confident, industry-ready hospitality professionals from day one.

What is your vision for the future of hospitality education in India, and how do you see your institute contributing to the industry’s growth?

My vision for hospitality education in India is grounded in leading with both empathy and innovation—preparing students to master the ‘two languages’ hospitality now demands: human emotion and intelligent technology. Hospitality must never lose its heart, even as we embrace new tools. That’s why IIHM is pioneering the AI-Hospitality transformation: we launched India’s first hospitality-specific generative AI platform, NamAIste HospitalityGPT, and introduced the AI in Hospitality Awards to celebrate tech-driven yet human-centric service

At IIHM, we’re building a global, inclusive ecosystem—one that blends tradition and digital fluency. Through visionary programs like our Global Knowledge Sharing Declaration and AI-powered tools enriched with empathy, we’re equipping future hospitality leaders to shape an industry that’s smarter, more sustainable, and deeply humane. My goal is for India, through IIHM’s model, to emerge as a world hub for hospitality education—where technology enhances warmth, and values lead the way.
