Highlighting the importance of enhancing tourism infrastructure, Minister for Tourism and Public Works PA Mohamed Riyas stated that the development of state guest houses and rest houses is a top priority for the government. These facilities play a crucial role in promoting tourism by ensuring comfortable accommodations for visitors at key destinations, he said. The minister was speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed four-storey government guest house in Ponmudi, one of Kerala’s most popular hill stations.
“Providing world-class lodging options is essential for the growth of tourism. That’s why the government has prioritized the renovation and development of guest and rest houses across the state to enrich the overall tourist experience,” Riyas said.
He added that, besides Ponmudi, similar upgrades are underway in Guruvayoor, Kanyakumari, Wayanad, Aluva, Munnar, and Calicut—locations that attract significant tourist traffic. The minister noted that Kerala has seen a sharp rise in tourist arrivals in recent years, reaching a record high in 2024, with projections indicating continued growth in the current year.

Ponmudi, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, has long been a favorite among both domestic and international tourists. The launch of a fully-equipped guest house here was a key focus for the tourism department. According to Riyas, the new facility will further strengthen Ponmudi’s status as a premier hill station. Presiding over the function, Vamanapuram MLA Shri DK Murali said, “The new guest house addresses a major infrastructural need at the destination and is expected to encourage greater tourist inflow.”
Tourism Director Sikha Surendran remarked that the well-appointed guest house, with all amenities required for a comfortable stay, will significantly enhance the experience for tourists visiting the picturesque hill station. Also present at the function were District Panchayath President D Suresh Kumar, Vamanapuram Block Panchayath President G Komalam, Peringamala Grama Panchayath President Shinu Madathara, and other local elected representatives.
The new guest house spans 2,590 square meters over four floors. It includes 22 air-conditioned rooms, six of which are suites; an AC conference hall; two AC dining halls; a modern kitchen; dedicated driver accommodations; and a spacious parking area for tourist vehicles.
