ITA Airways Joins Star Alliance, Expanding Global Connectivity Across Italy and Beyond

ITA Airways has officially joined Star Alliance as its 26th member, marking a major milestone in the airline’s growth and strengthening global connectivity to and from Italy. The induction ceremony took place at the Piazza di Spagna Lounge at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport Terminal 3, in the presence of senior leaders, media and institutional guests. The ceremony was presided over by Joerg Eberhart, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, ITA Airways; Theo Panagiotoulias, Chief Executive Officer, Star Alliance; and Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer, Lufthansa Group.

Starting April 1, ITA Airways is fully integrated into the Alliance’s global network, linking its hubs in Rome and Milan via Milan Linate Airport and Rome Fiumicino and connecting with 17 Star Alliance member airlines. The integration connects travellers to more than 1,150 destinations worldwide, offering seamless journeys with through check-in, reciprocal frequent flyer recognition and access to Star Alliance lounges across the network.

Welcoming the new member, Theo Panagiotoulias said, “On behalf of our members, I am delighted to welcome ITA Airways as the 26th member of Star Alliance. With ITA Airways on board, we expand our network to and from Italy and elevate the connected travel experience through access to the world’s largest network of airport lounges and enhanced loyalty benefits and services such as baggage tracking.”

Joerg Eberhart added, “Joining Star Alliance marks a historic milestone for ITA Airways. Becoming part of the world’s largest and most established global airline network significantly expands our international reach while offering passengers smoother connections, integrated services and a stronger premium proposition. We are proud to bring our distinctive Italian identity and hospitality to the Alliance.”

ITA Airways’ integration was mentored by the Lufthansa Group, with expert teams across the group’s airlines supporting an intensive integration programme over recent months.

Dieter Vranckx said, “The Star Alliance membership reflects strong collaboration between ITA Airways, Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance teams. Together, we are unlocking a joint value proposition that benefits customers, partners and the broader Alliance ecosystem.”

With the addition of ITA Airways, Star Alliance now comprises 26 member airlines, offering more than 17,500 daily flights across a network spanning over 190 countries.
