Carnival – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Dates: February 28 – March 4, 2025

It’s the world’s biggest party! Think samba parades, extravagant costumes, and an electrifying state of mind that will linger in your feet for months. Carnival, which has its roots in Catholic traditions, is a pre-Lenten spectacle, a final indulgence before 40 days of repentance. But, let’s face it; most people are more fascinated with the rhythm and celebration. Don’t just watch the parade; join one!

Holi – India

Dates: March 13–14, 2025

Holi, also known as the ‘Festival of Colours,’ is a chance to bombard strangers with powdered paint without fear of arrest. Holi, which celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring, is a happy reminder that colour makes life (and people) better. Wear old clothes and leave your camera behind—no gadget is safe from the Holi rainbow explosion.

Songkran – Thailand

Dates: April 13–15, 2025

Imagine a nationwide water war. Songkran, or Thai New Year, is all about drowning friends, relatives, and tourists with buckets of water. Water has historically symbolised purity and the banishing of ill fortune. Nowadays, it’s just as important to bathe anybody who crosses your path. Arm yourself with a water gun and enjoy the chaos!

Venice Biennale – Venice, Italy

Dates: April 20 – November 24, 2025

This famous demonstration of contemporary art and architecture attracts both art aficionados and trendsetters. The Biennale, established in 1895, provides an opportunity for artists to challenge, provoke, and inspire, transforming Venice into a living canvas. Take a gondola ride between exhibitions—because art is more fun when combined with a picturesque sail.

Oktoberfest – Munich, Germany

Dates: September 20 – October 5, 2025

Beer steins, lederhosen, and pretzels—need I say more? What began as a royal wedding celebration in 1810 has evolved into a lasting dedication to Bavarian culture (and beer). Pace yourself—those litre-sized steins rapidly add up. Take the time to learn a little German: “Prost!” means “Cheers!”

Thimphu Festival – Bhutan

Dates: 2-4 October, 2025

Thimphu Festival, one of the greatest events on the Bhutanese calendar due to its location in the capital, attracts residents as well as tourists. Before the festival begins, there are days and nights of rituals and prayers to the gods. These are then followed by street dances in which performers wear masks and enact stories and legends. It’s a captivating spectacle, and the atmosphere is phenomenal.

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) – Mexico

Dates: October 31 – November 2, 2025

Vibrant altars, sugar skulls, and parades pay homage to deceased loved ones in a joyous rather than solemn manner. It’s a deeply spiritual celebration of life, recollections, and familial bonds in which both the living and dead share a moment. Paint your face like a calavera (sugar skull), but remember that the purpose is to convey respect.

Akwasidae Festival, Ghana

Dates: Throughout the year, held every six weeks

The Akwasidae Festival, which follows the Ashanti calendar, is one of Ghana’s most fascinating festivities. The ceremonies take place at Kumasi’s Royal Palace, where the Ashanti King, dressed in vibrant attire and exquisite ancient jewellery, sits beneath a colourful umbrella surrounded by Ashanti elders and advisors. The Akwasidae Festival features sword and knife bearers, carriers of beautiful ostrich feathers, and other emblems of power, as well as an eruption of music and visuals from drummers, trumpeters, storytellers, and dancers.

Yi Peng Lantern Festival – Chiang Mai, Thailand

Dates: November, 2025

Imagine a night sky filled with thousands of illuminated lanterns floating toward the heavens—it’s as wonderful as it sounds. This festival embraces gratitude and new beginnings while also releasing negativity and welcoming good luck. Grab a lantern and make a wish!

Hogmanay – Edinburgh, Scotland

Dates: December 31, 2025 – January 1, 2026

Torchlight processions, fireworks, and all-night ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dances) make New Year’s Eve even more festive in Edinburgh. Hogmanay has its roots in Norse and Celtic customs, which celebrate renewal and the end of the previous year’s gloom. Don’t miss the “Loony Dook,” a cold dip in the River Forth to start the year right!
